Story and the three branches
Story, not a dungeon map 3 listed sources
You collect three stones as a child, draw the Master Sword, and wake seven years later to gather the sages. Zelda then sends Link back.
What the ending does
The adult half is the sages and Ganondorf. Navi leaves. Zelda plays the ocarina and returns Link to childhood so he can warn her before the takeover. That return is why the child branch exists. Zelda Wiki draws three roads out of this game: the child branch, which Majora's Mask follows while Link looks for Navi; the adult branch, which reaches Wind Waker; and the fallen-hero branch, which reaches A Link to the Past. Wikipedia's Majora's Mask article calls that game the direct sequel and dates it to 27 Apr 2000 in Japan and 26 Oct 2000 in North America.
A search that asks whether the remake explains the timeline better is really asking for new narration. I have not seen a source that says the 2026 script redraws these branches. The events above are the 1998 story, replayed with new voices.
Questions
Is Majora's Mask a sequel?
Yes. It follows the child-branch Link.
Does the hero die in one branch?
The fallen-hero branch is the timeline's name for the road where Ganondorf wins. It is a branch, not a scene you unlock.
