Dead Hand
Bottom of the Well and Shadow Temple 3 listed sources
Dead Hand is the pale reach under the well and again inside the Shadow Temple. The well copy is the one that leaves the Lens of Truth.
Let it grab, then swing
Hands come out of the ground first. If you only slash the hands, the body can refuse to rise. The reliable bait is to stand where a hand can catch Link, break the grab with the button mash, and cut the head while it is exposed. The laugh is the audio cue that you are in the room, which matters in the Shadow Temple because that dungeon is already full of false floors. Damage quotes in the old guides say about half a heart per hit. I will not convert that into a remake number.
The well reward is the Lens of Truth, which the Shadow Temple then expects you to wear. The Shadow Temple copy of Dead Hand is a repeat of the trick without that prize. Players who call the remake version scarier are talking about the model. Bring the same plan: bait, break, head.
The well visit and the return fight — original game
Reach the Bottom of the Well as child Link after learning Song of Storms in the adult windmill and playing it there in the earlier era. The Dead Hand encounter inside is tied to the Lens of Truth chest. The visible hands are the bait: allow one to seize Link, break free, and watch for the body to lower its head before striking. Running around without triggering the encounter can leave the room feeling empty despite the hands being visible. The Shadow Temple later reuses this enemy as a miniboss encounter, but the expected reward there is different. Distinguish the enemy name from the dungeon item before retracing the well.
Questions
Where is the Lens drop?
The Bottom of the Well encounter, not the Shadow Temple one.
Can you kill the hands only?
Clearing hands can force the body up, but the grab-and-head cut is the usual route.
