Navi
Both eras 4 listed sources
Navi is the fairy partner assigned by the Great Deku Tree. She is the reason the Kokiri finally accept that Link has a companion, and she is the targeting reticle for the whole quest.
What she actually does
From Kokiri Forest onward she can mark an enemy, a sign, or a person you can talk to. That marker is the Z-target on the Nintendo 64 and the same idea on later pads. She is there for the child dungeons and still there when Link wakes as an adult, though the humanoid Ganondorf fight initially prevents her from approaching. Players joke about her hints. The hints are the tutorial. Ignoring them is allowed. The story does not replace her with a different fairy at the seven-year mark.
The ending sends her off. Majora's Mask opens with Link looking for her, which is why a timeline argument keeps circling her exit. The remake adjusts hint text and camera behavior around the new free look, and it gives her a voice. If a page on the internet is selling a Navi mod or an error code, it is not this biography.
Target information has limits — original game
On the original controller, Z-targeting keeps attention on a nearby enemy or character. Navi's color and position help distinguish an opponent from another point of interest, and her enemy comments can explain a weakness before the player has learned its pattern. Her hints are not a substitute for every room puzzle: a missing Small Key still requires searching the dungeon. During the humanoid Ganondorf battle she initially cannot get close enough to assist, so that encounter deliberately removes the targeting help players have relied on. The later Ganon encounter restores her assistance. That interruption is part of the original final battle rather than a controller fault.
