Epona
Lon Lon Ranch and Hyrule Field 3 listed sources
Epona is Malon's horse at Lon Lon Ranch. Child Link can only call the foal over. Adult Link can ride her after two races.
Foal, then the two races
As a child you learn Epona's Song from Malon. Playing it near the foal brings her to the fence. You cannot saddle her, and a guide that says to ride to Gerudo Valley in the child era is wrong. Seven years later Ingo has the ranch. Beat his first race, then the second, and the horse leaves with you. Hyrule Field is the place she matters: carrots as spurts of speed, fences you can jump, and the long west road toward the broken bridge at Gerudo Valley.
The song page has the buttons. This page is the animal. She also shows up in the valley itself once the bridge is the problem, because a jump on horseback is one of the two ways across. The other is the Longshot. I am not assigning a top speed number. No manual I checked printed one.
Winning and leaving the ranch — original game
Adult Link first pays Ingo to ride inside the ranch enclosure. Play Epona's Song to call the correct horse, practise the fence jumps and speak to Ingo while mounted to start the race challenge. Winning once is not the entire quest: the second race is the wager for the horse. After both wins, Ingo closes the gate. Build up speed and jump out of the enclosure to keep Epona. Use carrots with enough reserve for the next straight rather than emptying them all immediately. Once the quest is complete, Epona's Song calls her in suitable outdoor areas; she is not a mount that can be summoned inside every dungeon.
Questions
Can child Link ride Epona?
No. She is still a foal. The song only calls her closer.
